December 2019 – The Autism Registry is changing. KLPS (Kawartha Lakes Police Service) will maintain their registry as a Vulnerable Persons Registry. This includes Autism, Alzheimer’s, Brain Injury, etc. for anyone who is at risk of wandering and/or for mental health issues.

KLPS Registry is only valid within the bounds of the town of Lindsay (former Ops Township). If you live, work, visit or cottage in the town it may be worth registering with them. Registration can be done in person or the form may be printed from their website https://kawarthalakespolice.com/services/vulnerable-person-registry/

Parents or caregivers of a vulnerable person living in Lindsay or Ops Twp. can submit this informationto the records staff at the front desk of the police service at 6 Victoria Avenue North, Lindsay, ON K9V 4E5

PLEASE NOTE: The KLPS and OPP registries are NOT connected. If you and/or your vulnerable person will be in both jurisdictions you will want to sign up with both.

The OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) have now partnered with MedicAlert to increase the scope of their Vulnerable Persons Registry. Information will be available throughout Ontario, across Canada, all of North America and even many countries internationally by any first responder using the MedicAlert ID#.

MedicAlert Connect Protect service gives police officers 24-hour access to a registered subscriber’s photo, identifying information, past wandering history, triggers, de-escalation techniques and other medical information through MedicAlert identification.

This service is ideal for vulnerable persons who may wander, such as those with Alzheimer’s or autism, as well as for those living with conditions that predispose them to certain behavioural characteristics which may often be misinterpreted by the law as defiance or aggression or intoxication (i.e. FASD, brain injury, mental health concerns, etc.), or those living with a medical condition that require immediate and focused attention in an emergency.

If you know someone who lives, works, visits or cottages in an OPP jurisdiction, or one of the other communities where MedicAlert Connect Protect service is available and will benefit from the MedicAlert service, please recommend them to sign up today.
